Fast & Furious: Vin Diesel teases Charlize Theron Cipher spin-off

July 2, 2021 by Ricky Church

After the Fast & Furious franchise made its grand return to theatres last week with F9, eyes have been looking forward to what may come next in the mega-franchise and series lead Vin Diesel has teased in an interview with Variety that F9’s villainous Cipher, played by Charlize Theron, may end up getting her own spin-off in the Fast & Furious universe.

Diesel revealed to Variety he already has writers working on a screenplay for a Cipher spin-off. Introduced in The Fate of the Furious, the franchise’s eighth installment, Cipher is a cyberterrorist and criminal mastermind who has connections all over the world. That film revealed she was secretly working behind the scenes as the employer for some of the franchise’s previous antagonists and had blackmailed Diesel’s Dominic Toretto into working for her. In F9, she tries gaining her hands on another piece of cybertechnology and uses Dom’s estranged brother Jakob to help her in her scheme. As for what a Cipher spin-off would look like or be about as Diesel was mum on the details of the story.

This would not be the first time Fast & Furious has dabbled in spin-offs of its supporting characters or villains. In 2019 the spin-off Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw was released which followed Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham’s Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw reluctantly teaming up to recover a dangerous weaponized disease. A sequel is already in the works as is a female-centric spin-off of the franchise’s many female characters.

The tenth and eleventh Fast & Furious films are already in the works which will apparently serve as a grand finale to The Fast Saga.

Vin Diesel’s Dom Toretto is leading a quiet life off the grid with Letty and his son, little Brian, but they know that danger always lurks just over their peaceful horizon. This time, that threat will force Dom to confront the sins of his past if he’s going to save those he loves most. His crew joins together to stop a world-shattering plot led by the most skilled assassin and high-performance driver they’ve ever encountered: a man who also happens to be Dom’s forsaken brother, Jakob (John Cena, the upcoming The Suicide Squad).

The action hurtles around the globe—from London to Tokyo, from Central America to Edinburgh, and from a secret bunker in Azerbaijan to the teeming streets of Tbilisi. Along the way, old friends will be resurrected, old foes will return, history will be rewritten, and the true meaning of family will be tested like never before.

Fast & Furious 9 sees Justin Lin directing a cast that includes Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, John Cena, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, Sung Kang, Michael Rooker, Helen Mirren, Kurt Russell, and Charlize Theron.
