Universal Pictures unleashed the third and final chapter of the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy into cinemas around the globe this weekend, with the Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan-headlined erotic drama Fifty Shades Freed whipping up a $137 million opening worldwide.
The film, directed by Fifty Shades Darker helmer James Foley, grossed $38.8 million domestically (down from the $85.1 million debut of Fifty Shades of Grey in 2015 and the $46.6 million opening weekend of last year’s Fifty Shades Darker). Internationally, it added a further $98.1 million from international markets.
The Fifty Shades of Grey franchise has now earned $1.089 billion worldwide, and is expected to top out at aruond $1.25 billion. Not bad for a combined budget of $150 million…
