Its been a bit of a roller coaster ride for DC’s fastest man alive when it comes to his feature film. The Flash’s solo movie previously had directors Seth Grahame-Smith and Rick Famuyiwa attached, but after they left due to creative differences the film was put on hold. Now Variety has reported that WB has put Flashpoint, which was formally announced at SDCC last year, back on track with Vacation and Game Night directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein set to helm the film.
Daley and Goldstein already have experience in the comic book genre after writing the script for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. There has been a lot speculation as to why its taken so long for WB to begin development again for Flashpoint and Variety notes it was to make sure Ezra Miller, who played the Scarlet Speedster in Justice League, would have a clear schedule with his commitment to Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, where he reprises his role as Credence.
Interestingly, WB also asked Batman actor Ben Affleck if he would like to direct Flashpoint before setting on Daley and Goldstein. Affleck, however, turned the job down. With Daley and Goldstein directing the film, there is a chance Flashpoint could take on a bit more of a comedic tone given their work on the comedies Vacation and Game Night as well as the slightly comedic tone in Spider-Man: Homecoming. However, Homecoming balanced its comedy pretty well with its drama, delivering fairly good serious moments with character development.
Flashpoint will be based on the Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert series that saw Flash waking in a timeline with significantly changed events. Instead of landing in a Kansas cornfield, Superman’s craft landed in the heart of Metropolis and demolished most of the city while Wonder Woman became a warmongering Amazon at war with Aquaman and Atlantis and it was Thomas Wayne who became Batman after Bruce Wayne was shot in the alley. Flashpoint was previously adapted as an animated feature and very loosely in the third season of The Flash.
It has been rumoured that Gal Gadot will appear in Flashpoint while many fans, including Ezra Miller, have clamoured for Jeffery Dean Morgan, who briefly appeared as Thomas Wayne in Batman v Superman, to star as the Flashpoint Batman.
