The Flickering Myth writing team give their thoughts on the leaked Deadpool test footage…
Perhaps the biggest surprise coming out of San Diego Comic-Con was the leaked test footage for the long-gestating Deadpool movie, directed by Tim Miller and featuring voice work by Ryan Reynolds. It was taken down, put back up, taken back down and then put up by Miller himself.
Watch the footage in glorious HD here.
So, what did you writing and editorial team think of the footage?
Anthony Donovan Stokes: I read the script and it’s a pretty close to the footage was saw and was very funny. Pretty much what I want from a Deadpool movie.
Oliver Davis: Bizarre. I like the idea of the super(aware)hero, but whenever I’ve picked up the books in the past, they’re too self-referential for me. Which is weird, because I love stuff like that usually. Perhaps I haven’t read the right stuff. I enjoyed the footage, but I was already being pestered by the same reservations. I want to like it, but it may be too much for me.
Villordsutch: A big barrel of fun in two chaotic minutes. That being said though I’m unsure if I would be able to deal with an hour and a half of anarchic quipping. Perhaps giving this a series à la Archer and we’d be on to a winner, but a full blown film and I’d errr at watching it.
Luke Owen: Deadpool is fine in small doses. His gimmick wears thin in his books and his appereance in Marvel v Capcom 3 was funny for the first couple of fights but quickly becomes annoying. I could see a movie having the same problems.
The footage was fine, but nothing to write home about.
Helen Murdoch: Really enjoyed it, witty and hilarious. However, stretched out over a 2 hour film it might wear a little thin
Anthony Donovan Stokes: The script was genuinely hilarious, it had just enough self-referential humour. I share similar concerns with the Deadpool character, but I literally had to stop reading because it was so funny.
Luke Owen: I think there is a differnece between reading a script and seeing it play on screen though.
Kris Wall: I like the look of it but I can’t help but agree that it might grate on me across the course of a whole film. I love the Deadpool comics but he’s the one character I feel would be difficult to get right anywhere outside of the comics. I can’t fault Ryan Reynolds’ passion for the character though, if there’s one person that’s right to steer this project, it’s him.
Luke Owen: Ryan Reynold’s lack of charisma is the least of the movie’s problems.
Gav Logan: Had to watch a few times just to get my head around it. I really liked it, though Im not sure the talking to the camera thing would completely work for a whole feature film. He reminded me a little bit of Jim Carrey’s The Mask only obviously not quite as over the top. Really want to see this movie get made, it’s definitely different but exciting.
Rohan Morbey: Utter shite.
Chris Cooper: “I’m pregnant Trevor.” It had me at that point.
In terms of the character it’s perfect. Reynold’s was born for the part. Shame he went through Blade: Trinity, R.I.P.D., Green Lantern (still think that was the script) and X-Men: Origins (good when he was Wade at the start). Doesn’t sound good when you list it like that though I’ll admit. I’ve always found him amusing so I’m not too concerned about it wearing out. A good script would balance it out. I get why the rest of you might feel that though. I’d love it if FOX grew the balls to make it.
Luke Owen: If they made it into a short series, it would be much better. But two hours of him would be insufferable. And I’d prefer it if it was someone other than Reynolds…
Oliver Davis: Two Guys and A Girl. Eat my Pizza Place, Owen.
Kris Wall: Who would you prefer, Luke ? I feel that Reynolds has been attached to it for so long that I genuinely struggle to think of anyone else that could play the character.
Luke Owen: There are hundreds of comedic actors you could get to play the role. Reynolds is not a good enough at comedy to make the role work. He comes of smarmy when that’s the last thing Deadpool needs to be.
Anthony Donovan Stokes: Charlie Day, Sean William Scott, and Bradley Cooper could make good Deadpools.
Luke Owen: Charlie Day is a good shout. Not so much Sean William Scott.
Ray Willmott: I’m not sure if it would make a great 2 hour movie. It was entertaining for a few minutes, but i’m not sure Deadpool works as a film. A TV series, however, could definitely be very interesting.
David Fleming: As test footage goes, it was pretty damn cool.
Scott J Davis: I thought it looked great, however I’d agree wholeheartedly that it I don’t think it would work as a full length feature just on his own. Think Reynolds is great choice for the lead, but think it would work better as a character in another film. That said, a TV show could work.
And trust Rohan to hate it…
Matt Spencer-Skeen: Never been a big Deadpool fan, that said I liked the footage and could see a feature working. It would have the smallest margin for error though and I don’t know if FOX have the balls or know how to be able manage this.
Ozzy Armstrong: It’s only test footage so we can’t read too much into it but I think it has promise, especially considering how many superhero movies get released. I think this one, like Guardians of the Galaxy, could be a nice change of pace from the norm. Definitely worth a shot in my book
Martin Carr: I liked it, watched it thrice. Someone just needs to put their balls out in the wind and make it now….
Robert Kojder: Take my money now.
