Following on from this week’s casting of Ian Gomez as Snapper Carr, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Supergirl has added another DC Comics character to its ranks for season two, with Floriana Lima (The Family) signing on for the series regular role of Maggie Sawyer.
Created by John Byrne in 1987, Maggie is one of the earliest openly gay characters in the DC universe, and has been romantically involved with Kate Kane’s Batwoman.
“I wanted to contemporize these comics that I loved growing up and have them reflect the society that we live in now,” said producer Greg Berlanti. “It’s still about working in some of those very real qualities so that everyone feels represented.”
In the comic books, Maggie has served as a member of the Metropolis Special Crimes Unit, a division of the police department dealing with metahumans. Her character in Supergirl will be a police detective in National City, who takes a special interest in the cases involving aliens.
Lima and Gomez will be joined in the cast of Supergirl season two by fellow new additions Tyler Hoechlin as Superman and Lynda Carter as the President of the United States. The second season will get underway on The CW on October 10th.
