A few hours ago Entertainment Weekly shared details of the characters set to feature in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, save for that of Forest Whitaker, who the site suggested had historical ties to the Star Wars saga. Well, we now know who Whitaker is playing, and it’s a character who first debuted in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series.
EW has revealed that Whitaker is portraying Saw Gerrera, a character who appeared in four episodes of season five of The Clone Wars, and has also been mentioned by name in Star Wars Rebels and the novel Star Wars: Bloodline. During the Clone Wars, he and his sister Steela lead a guerrilla group against the Seperatists on their home world of Onderon, receiving help from Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
“Consider him kind of a battered veteran who leads a band of Rebel extremists,” states Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “He’s on the fringe of the Rebel Alliance. Even [they] are a little concerned about him.”
ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY, is the first film in the new standalone movies from Lucasfilm. It tells the story of how a group of unlikely heroes unite to undertake a daring and seemingly impossible mission to steal the plans for the Death Star.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set for release on December 16th 2016, with a cast that includes Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Diego Luna (Milk), Ben Mendelsohn (The Dark Knight Rises), Donnie Yen (Ip Man), Jiang Wen (Let the Bullets Fly), Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), Alan Tudyk (Con Man) and Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler).
