Epic Games’ hugely successful multiplayer shooter Fortnite enjoyed a record year for earnings in 2019, with data from Nielsen revealing that it pulled in a whopping $1.8 billion in sales over the past twelve months.
As reported by Deadline, Fortnite’s earnings – which comes from Battle Passes and in-game purchases – were up 4% on the previous year, and has set a new record for the highest single year earnings of any video game title in history.
In total, the video game industry earned $122 billion last year, broken down as follows: $64.4 billion on mobile gaming; $29.6 billion on PC gaming; $15.4 billion on console gaming; $6.5 billion on game-related videos; and $6.3 billion on virtual reality and augmented reality games.
Fortnite launched in 2017 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon, attracting over 125 million players from around the globe.
