Fortnite sets video game revenue record with $2.4 billion in 2018

Epic Games’ Fortnite has quickly become a pop culture phenomenon, with the online shooter attracting over 200 million players around the globe, and so it will come as little surprise to hear how successful the free-to-play title has become from a financial perspective.

According to estimates from Nielsen’s SuperData (via Deadline), Fortnite pulled in an astonishing $2.4 billion in 2018, setting a new record for the most annual revenue of any game in history.

Total digital video game revenue reached $87.7 billion in 2018, compared to $17.9 billion from physical releases. Of that $87.7 billion, 80% was spent on free-to-play games, with the top ten as follows:
