FX’s Atlanta and Better Things renewed for season 2

September 21, 2016 by Justin Cook

Despite only being a few episodes into their first seasons, FX has already decided to give second-season renewals to Donald Glover’s Atlanta and Pamela Adlon’s Better Things. Keeping in line with the trend established by nearly all of FX and FXX’s comedies, the upcoming seasons will consist of ten episodes each.

Ever since its debut, Atlanta has been lighting up the internet with thousands of people taking to such platforms as Facebook and Twitter to express their love for the show. Critics have extensively praised the show as well, citing Glover’s textured writing and excellent acting as clear highlights.

Additionally, Atlanta debuted with over one million viewers and retained an impressive 92% of its audience for its second episode (which aired immediately after the premiere), so all in all, it’s been known for a number of days now that a second season was in the cards. It looks like Glover can add successful TV show creator to his ever-growing list of accomplishments.

Of course, outside of the realm of television, Glover has risen to prominence under his stage name of Childish Gambino, starred in Ridley Scott’s Best Picture-nominated The Martian, filmed a stand-up special and much more.

As for Better Things, the show hasn’t quite been met with the same amount of success in the ratings, but a seemingly loyal fan base and positive reception was enough for it to receive a pick-up. Adlon stars in the series as a single mother raising three daughters; she co-created the show with Louis C.K. of FX’s Louie.

On their decisions, Nick Grad and Eric Schrier, Presidents of Original Programming at FX Networks and FX Productions, said, “It’s really gratifying to launch two new comedies that have received overwhelming critical acclaim right out of the gate and that are emblematic of FX’s award-winning brand. It is clear to us that Atlanta and Better Things have struck a nerve with viewers, which is a credit to Donald Glover’s vision for Atlanta and Pamela Adlon’s vision for Better Things. They, along with their spectacular casts, writers and directors, have created exceptional shows that we are incredibly proud to produce.”
