Game of Thrones’ Bryan Cogman joins Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings series

May 25, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Deadline is reporting that Amazon Studios’ The Lord of the Rings TV series has swooped to snap up Game of Thrones writer and producer Bryan Cogman following the (divisive) conclusion to HBO’s hugely-successful fantasy series.

Cogman started out as a writing assistant to showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss; in addition to writing the series bible for Game of Thrones, Cogman went on to pen several key episodes, rising to a producer and earning a reputation on set as the unofficial “keeper of the mythos”.

Amazon Studio has been working away on its Lord of the Rings for a couple of years now, with screenwriters JD Payne and Patrick McKay (Star Trek Beyond) signing on to help develop the project last summer.

The series is based on the Middle-earth works of J.R.R. Tolkien and serving as a prequel to The Lord of the Rings, with a recent teaser suggesting it will take place during the Second Age. It’s also reportedly going to become the most expensive TV show in history with a budget of around $1 billion across five seasons.
