Another prequel set in the world of Westeros is in development at HBO as Variety reports that George R.R. Martin’s novellas The Tales of Dunk and Egg will get a series adaptation.
Set nearly 100 years before Game of Thrones, the series will follow “the adventures of Dunk (Ser Duncan the Tall) and Egg (the future king Aegon V Targaryen).” The series is based on three novellas Martin wrote: The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight, which were released in 2015 in one book as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The book have also been released as graphic novels, with the most recent being The Mystery Knight.
This is not the first Game of Thrones prequel/spin-off HBO has been developing as they are currently working on House of the Dragon. That series is set 300 years before Game of Thrones at the height of the Targaryen dynasty’s power in Westeros, but the powerful family is on the brink of civil war that will set the course for Westeros’ future, including the adventures of Dunk and Egg as Ser Duncan is tasked with protecting the Targaryen heir to the throne.
Another prequel was in development that would have starred Naomi Watts and taken place 1000 years before the show, but did not make it past the pilot stage. House of the Dragon will debut in 2022 but there is no word on when we can expect The Tales of Dunk and Egg.
