There was plenty of excitement when it was first announced that Lucasfilm had enlisted Rian Johnson and Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss to develop their own Star Wars trilogies, although enthusiasm for both has dampened somewhat since then, given the mixed receptions to Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Benioff and Weiss’ work on the final seasons of Game of Thrones.
Nevertheless, the two projects remain in active development at Lucasfilm (unlike the studio’s planned Anthology movies), and following the recent announcement of an untitled Star Wars movie for release in December 16th 2022, Disney CEO Bob Iger has confirmed that this film will be helmed by Benioff and Weiss.
In addition to the 2022 release, Disney and Lucasfilm also announced Star Wars projects for December 2024 and December 2026, and it’s unclear whether those have been reserved for the second and third chapters of D&D’s trilogy, if indeed their project is still a trilogy at this point. Nor is it clear as to where Johnson’s series could fit into the schedule, assuming Disney doesn’t add any further Star Wars dates in the future.
