Universal haven’t had to look very far when it comes to casting the role of Stoick in their live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon, with the news that Gerard Butler is set to reprise his role as the Viking chief and Hiccup’s father.
With the lead roles of Hiccup and Astrid going to Mason Thames (The Black Phone) and Nico Parker (The Last of Us), returning director Dean DeBlois has decided to stick with what he knows when it comes to casting the gruff Viking, and as per Deadline’s story, Butler will once again get to blow the horn in the live-action version of the DreamWorks Animation franchise.
Based on the book by Cressida Cowell, 2010’s How to Train Your Dragon was a surprise success upon its release, bringing in nearly $500 million at the box-office and earning Academy Award nominations for best-animated film and best score, as well as creating one of the most beloved animated creations in recent times with Toothless the dragon. The second and third films were also a huge success, earning nominations for the best-animated movie during their respective years. The original trilogy has grossed more than $1.6 billion at the box office, and spawned numerous spin-offs.
The live-action adaptation is set to fly in to cinemas on June 13, 2025.
Next up for Butler is action-sequel Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, before starring alongside Oscar Isaac and Jason Momoa in the crime-thriller In the Hand of Dante.
