Just when you thought it was safe to return to the woods, the Blair Witch is here to scare you again.
News broke this week, posted initially on Production Weekly and shared by Bloody Disgusting that a Blair Witch sequel is on the way. As reported, Oliver Park is attached to direct “Untitled Blair Witch Sequel” for Lionsgate, with the original film’s production company Haxan Film attached to the project. Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez are listed as producers, best known for writing and directing the 1999 cult classic.
Oliver Park is best known for his horror genre work, including last year’s The Offering, and smaller indie projects like Strange Events, Still, and A Night of Horror: Nightmare Radio.
The Blair Witch Project stormed into cinemas in the summer of 1999 and changed horror forever. The film made a lane for low-budget horror in mainstream horror while pushing found footage to the forefront of horror filmmaking. Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez helmed the project, which made $248.6 million on a less than $750,000 budget.
The 1999 film spawned two sequels, Book of Shadows from 2000 and Adam Wingard’s 2016 underrated sequel Blair Witch. Neither proved anywhere near as successful as the original outing, but Myrick & Sánchez never gave up hope for the perfect follow-up.
Oliver Park’s Blair Witch sequel is set for a late summer/fall shoot date.
