Ghostbusters has been animated before, but never for the big screen. That changes with a new project from Sony Pictures Animation.
Deadline reports a new Ghostbusters film is heading to cinemas, but it will go down the animation route.
Kris Pearn is attached to direct. The filmmaker is best known for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 and most recently helmed The Willoughbys.
Sony Pictures Animation and Netflix are also developing a separate, all-new animated series based on the IP. This would be the third fully animated interpretation of the franchise. The Real Ghostbusters ran from 1986 to 1991, followed by Extreme Ghostbusters in 1997.
It seems like Sony wants to double down and add more to that animated legacy. This new film project is still in very early development, so plot details remain sparse. While continuing the mainline live-action franchise could be intriguing, the animated movie outlet allows them more freedom.
Ghostbusters is a proven franchise, even with some diminishing returns in the latest installments. The five films have generated roughly a billion in box office revenue. When you add merchandise, TV shows, and games, this spooky family franchisee is worth between $1.5 and $2 billion.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is the latest installment, hitting cinemas this year while receiving mixed reviews from critics and grossing $201 million worldwide.
