With production on Starz’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods now well underway, Deadline is reporting that The X-Files veteran Gillian Anderson has signed on to play Media, the mouthpiece of the New Gods.
Media is described as “the New Gods’ public face and sales representative, by taking the form of various iconic celebrities. She lives off the attention and worship that people give to screens – to their laptops, their TVs, to their iPhones in their hands while they watch their TVs. Ever the perky spokesperson, and always in control, she spins stories in whatever direction best suits her.”
American Gods sees the old, mythological gods coming into conflict with the more modern gods of today: gods of technology, science, money and media. Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle), an ex-con who was just released from jail, comes into the service of Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane), secretly the old god Odin, and joins him in recruiting other surviving gods in the coming war with the new breed.
The series has been developed by Bryan Fuller (Hannibal, Pushing Daisies) and Michael Green (Kings, Heroes) and also stars Emily Browning as Laura Moon, Pablo Schreiber as Mad Sweeney, Yetide Badaki as Bilquis, Bruce Langley as Technical Boy, Crispin Glover as Mr. World, Jonathan Tucker as Low Key Lyesmith, Cloris Leachman as Zorya Vecherrnyaya, Peter Stormare as Czernobog, Chris Obi as Anubis and Mousa Kraish as The Jinn.
