Gina Carano fired from The Mandalorian and future Star Wars projects

February 11, 2021 by Ricky Church

Lucasfilm has announced Gina Carano has been fired from The Mandalorian and other potential Star Wars projects amid a social media controversy over posts Carano has made through her various channels.

Attention to Carano’s social media has grown in the last few months after the actress, who played former Rebel shock trooper Cara Dune on the series, has used her platform to vocalize anti-mask theories amid the worldwide pandemic, allegations of voter fraud regarding the recent US presidential election and transphobic comments with the hashtag #FireGinaCarano being used by fans since. Lucasfilm made the decision after one of Carano’s now deleted posts compared being a Republican in the US today to how Jewish people were treated in Nazi Germany.

“Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future,” Lucasfilm said in a statement. “Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”

The Hollywood Reporter notes Lucasfilm had planned on Carano headlining her own Star Wars series on Disney+ with the announcement to be made on the Disney Investor Day in December, likely the Rangers of the New Republic series, but scrapped those plans following many of Carano’s posts in November.

It is unknown if Lucasfilm intends on recasting Cara Dune in The Mandalorian and potentially other Star Wars projects or if they will simply sideline the character. We’ll have to wait for more information when The Mandalorian begins production on the third season.
