Since 2018, reports have been circulating that director Ridley Scott is wanting to develop a sequel to his historical epic Gladiator, and now, one of the stars of the original film has offered an update on the project.
In an interview with Collider, Connie Nielsen, who played Lucilla in the original film, confirmed that the sequel is still “on the ledger” but remains unsure when production will start.
“I know that it’s on the ledger, so let’s just see when Ridley – I know he had to do one or two other movies, and then I think it’s on the ledger after that, but I’m not quite sure where it’s at right now.”
Producer Walter F. Parkes confirmed back in 2019 that the film will be set 25-30 years after the original with reports claiming at the time of the announcement in 2018 that the initial plan was to continue the story through Lucius (Spencer Treat Clark), the son of Lucilla and the nephew of Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus. However, there has been no definitive confirmation if the creative team will be sticking to this premise or not.
