Edgar Wright has found his titular running man.
Reports have broken that Glen Powell will star in Wright’s The Running Man, an adaptation of Stephen King’s iconic work. Wright co-wrote the new script with Michael Bacall.
The project is being labeled as Powell’s “first action vehicle.” He’s best known for his work in Top Gun: Maverick and this year’s Anyone But You.
The Running Man is a dystopian thriller that follows protagonist Ben Richards as he participates in the game show The Running Man, in which contestants, allowed to go anywhere in the world, are chased by “Hunters.” The novel has a bit of a “pop culture” and political energy, which fits Wright’s style.
The 1987 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger was very loosely based on the novel and only saw moderate box office success. King has gone on record saying he is not a fan of the film or Schwarzenegger’s casting in the lead role.
