With the moviegoing hotbeds of New York and Los Angeles slowly opening up their theatres again, it appears that Warner Bros. and Legendary’s Godzilla vs. Kong is ready to trample over similar giant cityscapes on its way towards a pandemic-best opening at the box-office.
The Hollywood Reporter’s exclusive story suggests that ‘moviegoing confidence hits highest level since pandemic began’, which will in turn lead to a pandemic best $20 million or more opening for the Monsterverse sequel.
A survey conducted by the National Research Group, who are a leading Hollywood entertainment polling firm, has asked cinemagoers on a weekly basis since the start of the pandemic how they’d feel about going back to the big-screen, and this Thursday those saying that they would return to the multiplex rose to 57%, the highest since they shut down in March 2020.
Two weeks before Godzilla vs. Kong becomes the next box office litmus test, these results, coupled with the increased vaccination roll-out, and the re-opening of major territories, has led some analysts to predict the simultaneous cinema and HBO Max release will stomp all over Wonder Woman 1984‘s Christmas opening of $16.7 million.
