Meanwhile, awards season frontrunner Spotlight struggled with only three nominations, whilst The Big Short, Steve Jobs and The Revenant managed to secure four nods apiece.
Carol also dominated the Best Actress – Drama category, with co-leads Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara both nominated alongside Brie Larson (Room), Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) and Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) in a fiercely competitive field.
There were the usual snubs and surprises, with Mad Max: Fury Road netting two massive nominations for Best Picture – Drama and Best Director for George Miller.
The male acting categories yielded a handul of major snubs, with Johnny Depp missing out for Black Mass at the expense of Will Smith’s work in Concussion and the entire Spotlight ensemble conspicuous by their absence.
The Golden Globes 2016 will be announced on January 10th, 2016 in a ceremony hosted by Ricky Gervais.
