Paramount has found a director for its Grease prequel Summer Lovin’. According to Deadline, the studio has hired Brett Haley (Hearts Beat Loud) to helm the film.
Grease followed John Travolta’s Danny and Olivia Newton-John’s Sandy and their high school romance even though Danny is a greaser and Sandy is a valley girl. Summer Lovin’ comes from the song of the same name in the classic 1978 musical which described Danny and Sandy’s summer fling before they discovered they went to the same high school. The prequel will detail the beginning of their romance during that fateful summer.
Deadline also reported Paramount is apparently very confident in this project due to Haley’s passion for Grease and his take on updating it for modern audiences, seeing potential to turn it into a franchise.
Grease was a massive hit, spawning a sequel and plenty of stage adaptations including the 2016 live TV movie which starred Vanessa Hudgens and Julianne Hough.
