After helping to push the total gross of the Marvel Cinematic Universe beyond $7 billion at the global box office earlier this week, the James Gunn directed space opera Guardians of the Galaxy has now overtaken the North American haul of Iron Man 2 to become Marvel Studios’ fourth-highest grossing release on domestic soil.
Guardians has grossed $313.7 million in North America to date, compared to Iron Man 2’s $312.4 million, and will go on to surpass the original Iron Man later this week, with the 2008 MCU-launcher sitting on $318.4 million. Internationally, Guardians is on $632.3 million, and currently trails Thor: The Dark World ($644.8 million), Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($714.1 million), Iron Man 3 ($1.215 billion) and The Avengers ($1.518 billion).
Guardians of the Galaxy sees Gunn directing a cast that includes Chris Pratt (The Lego Movie) as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora, Dave Bautista (Riddick) as Drax the Destroyer, Bradley Cooper (American Hustle) as Rocket Raccoon, Vin Diesel (Fast & Furious 6) as Groot, Benicio Del Toro (Sin City) as The Collector, Lee Pace (The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug) as Ronan the Accuser, Karen Gillan (Doctor Who) as Nebula, Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond) as Korath, John C. Reilly (Step Brothers) as Rhomman Dey, Michael Rooker (The Walking Dead) as Yondu, Glenn Close (Damages) as Nova Prime Rael and Josh Brolin (Men in Black 3) as Thanos.
