After its release, Happy Death Day became a modern slasher classic for many fans, and the sequel only made fans crave more. Now, we finally have an update on a potential third installment as, after years of teases, actress Jessica Rothe and director Christopher Landon have finally confirmed that production on Happy Death Day 3 is underway soon.
“The third movie is moving forward,” Rothe proclaimed at the American Cinematheque. Happy Death Day director Landon was by her side and reiterated, “It is moving forward.”
We’ve been discussing this film for some time, with Rothe dishing on the movie since 2020. “I would love if we had the opportunity to complete the trilogy,” Rothe told Coming Soon. “I know that Chris has it all mapped out in his genius brain, but I also know that we only want to complete it if we get to do it right. I think it’s just a question of seeing if the opportunity for that exists in the world.”
Rothe addded, “But the funny thing is I have a feeling whether it’s now or in five years or ten or twenty, if we pull a Jamie Lee Curtis from ‘Halloween‘ and Tree comes back as a badass 50-year-old, I know that we will get to tell the rest of the story. I love Tree, I love that character so much, and I feel very, very grateful to have been a part of that.”
2017’s Happy Death Day from Blumhouse took the world by storm, receiving generally positive reviews and earning $125 million worldwide on a $4.8 million budget. Happy Death Day 2U, released in 2019, received mixed reviews from critics and only grossed $64 million worldwide.
