Despite plenty of rumours about a potential reboot of Lucasfilm’s Indiana Jones franchise following Disney’s acquisition, it was officially announced back in 2016 that Harrison Ford would be dusting off the fedora and bullwhip once again to reunite with director Steven Spielberg for a fifth instalment in the classic action adventure series.
Initially slated for release this year, Indiana Jones 5 has been delayed several times since, and is now set to hit theaters in July 2021, just a year short from Ford’s 80th birthday. Whether this will mark his final outing as Indy remains to be seen, but Ford already has a definite idea of who should replace him in the role when he decides to call it a day.
Nobody is going to be Indiana Jones,” Ford tells The Today Show. Don’t you get it? I’m Indiana Jones. When I’m gone, he’s gone. It’s easy!… This is a hell of a way to tell Chris Pine this. I’m sorry, man.”

Ford is presumably mixing up his Chrises (it’s actually Chris Pratt who’s long been rumoured as his Indiana Jones successor), but his comments echo the view of Steven Spileberg, with the filmmaker previously stating that: “I don’t think anyone could replace Harrison [Ford] as Indy, I don’t think that’s ever going to happen. It’s certainly not my intention to ever have another actor step into his shoes in the way there have been many actors that have played Spider-Man or Batman. There is only going to be one actor playing Indiana Jones and that’s Harrison Ford.”
What are your thoughts? Could you see anyone (successfully) replacing Ford as Indiana Jones? Do you think they’ll even try? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below or tweet us @FlickeringMyth…
