Snow White isn’t the box office powerhouse that Disney expected, and it could cause ripples through other productions like their once-planned Tangled adaptation.
Per THR, Disney’s live-action reimagining of its 2010 animated film is now on pause. The film has been in active development for some time now, with Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman) set to direct a script by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Thor: Love and Thunder).
While the studio had a spotty track record with live-action adaptations of their most iconic works, none has become a thorn in the side of Disney like Snow White. At the time of writing, the movie has grossed only $69 million domestically and $145 million worldwide on a production budget of $270 million. With controversy looming over the production and its two leading ladies, it seemed doomed from the jump, but these numbers are pretty shocking.
The report doesn’t note if Tangled will ever come to fruition, stating that no one knows if they’ll undergo a creative overhaul or will simply wait until this Snow White drama dies down. Disney will attempt another live-action remake later this summer with Lilo & Stitch, a remake of the 2002 animated film, set for a May release. That film has been met with much more positive first reactions, but only time will tell.
