HBO announces ‘preliminary discussions’ on Deadwood film

August 13, 2015 by Joshua Gill

Nine years and two weeks ago to this date fans of Deadwood saw the final episode of season 3 with the knowledge that HBO had dropped the popular historical drama. The assumption was that the show was left for dead, with so many discussions around a fourth season failing before they were ever seriously considered. However, it now seems it may be set for a return on the big screen.

Back in 2007, there was talk of a two movie instalment from creator David Milch, although after the dust had settled it seemed for a second time fans were left wondering whether these discussions would ever manifest themselves as a realitiy. During promotion of his latest HBO show Lucky in 2012, Milch was quoted in an interview with Vulture on the possibility of the Deadwood films, stating that: “No, I don’t think so. We got really close about a year ago. Never say never, but it doesn’t look that way.”

Many claimed that Deadwood was supposedly ‘kaput,’ but HBO has now announced that the popular television series has entered “very preliminary” discussions around its return from limbo. Previously, all information surrounding a possible film had come from the producers or writers, however this news comes from actor Garrett Dillahunt (Francis Wilcott), who tweeted, “I’m hearing credible rumours about a #Deadwood movie. #Everybodypray”, at which point HBO backed the rumours.

Although HBO has announced a Deadwood film before, knowing that the actors from the show have been approached makes it the most plausible information about a Deadwood return for the first time since the show’s cancellation.
