Back in August 2014 it was reported that HBO was in early discussions with regards to a revival of the beloved Western drama Deadwood, with the cable network subsequently confirming in January of last year that creator David Milch had been given the green light to resurrect the show as a film.
Since then, there’s been no further word on the project, and it seems HBO is as much in the dark as fans at present, with programming president Casey Bloys providing the following update during the Television Critics Association winter press tour:
“I haven’t read [series creator David Milch]’s script yet. I know he’s working on it. But I have not seen anything yet. I couldn’t even put odds on [whether it will happen]. I don’t want to get your hopes up or disappoint you in any way, so I’ll just say I don’t have any news. Which I truly don’t.”
A Deadwood movie has been in the pipeline since the show’s cancellation in 2006, with Milch originally looking for follow the third season with two two-hour movies. By 2012, it seemed that any hope of another outing had faded, before HBO renewed its interest in 2015.
