HBO Max is looking to add to its original content with a new anthology series based upon Scholastic’s hugely successful Point Horror series of Young Adult books, focusing in particular on the stories of prolific writer R.L. Stine.
As per Variety, the show is currently going by the working title Point Fear and is described as “an anthology series that exposes the horrors of being a teenager [with] each episode inspired by one of the books in the series, told for today’s audiences but with a nostalgic nod to the 1990s.
Lionsgate Television and Picturestart are producing the Point Horror series for HBO Max, while Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians) is in talks to direct and executive produce.
The Point Horror series was notable for helping to launch R.L. Stine’s career in children’s horror fiction – particularly the success of his 1989 novel The Babysitter. Stine – who is also currently working on a movie trilogy adaptation of his Fear Street books – is set to serve as an executive producer on the series.
