HBO Max is putting a Latin American spin on the Batman story with the streaming service ordering the original animated movie Batman Azteca from Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment.
Directed by Juan Meza-León (Harley Quinn), Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios – a.k.a. Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires – takes place during the time of the Aztec Empire and sees Horacio Garcia Rojas (Narcos: Mexico) leading his voice to the title character.
As per Deadline, the official synopsis for Batman Azteca reads:
In the time of the Aztec Empire, Yohualli Coatl — a young Aztec boy — experiences tragedy when his father and village leader, Toltecatzin, is murdered by Spanish Conquistadors. Yohualli escapes to Tenochtitlan to warn King Moctezuma and his high priest, Yoka, of imminent danger. Using the temple of Tzinacan, the bat god, as a lair, Yohualli trains with his mentor and assistant, Acatzin, developing equipment and weaponry to confront the Spaniard invasion, protect Moctezuma’s temple, and avenge his father’s death.
Batman Azteca is being produced entirely in Mexico with local talent. As yet, there’s no word on a potential release date.
