HBO Max’s controversial Velma series has a second season in development

February 15, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Controversy creates cash; that’s how the saying used to go. At the very least, enough online chatter and hate-watching can land you a second season; look at HBO Max’s Velma series.

Channing Dungey, Chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Television Group, spoke to Deadline this week about her work for the studio and her upcoming slate. While promoting Ted Lasso or gushing over Abbott Elementary’s notable awards season, Dungey also broke the news that they’re developing Velma Season 2.

In the report, Deadline notes, “Dungey’s team is working on a second season of Scooby-Doo spinoff Velma, an adult animated comedy that comes from Mindy Kaling and Charlie Grandy that was the streamer’s most-watched animated series debut ever.”

This news may surprise many, given the series’ rocky debut. From the first trailer, many were skeptical of this Scooby-Doo-less spinoff, and once it dropped on HBO Max, the backlash was harsh. Much of the backlash stems from the creative choices made by Kaling, while some have criticized Velma for its cringe comedy. The series is currently sitting around a 42% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with a Verified Audience source of 7%.

Sources close to the production note that while the second season is in development, there has yet to be an official renewal announcement from HBO Max.

Have you watched Velma? What are your thoughts on the series, and its impending renewal? Let us know on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
