HBO Max’s The Batman spinoff series loses showrunner over creative differences

November 18, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Earlier this year, it was announced that The Batman director Matt Reeves is set to expand the world of his Gotham by teaming with HBO Max for a TV series taking place in the world. However, it seems like the upcoming spinoff series has already lost its showrunner Terence Winter.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Winter has departed the project following creative differences as his “vision for the drama did not match what Reeves and other producers had in mind.” There is currently no news on who will be taking over showrunner duties following Winter’s departure.

While plot and release date details are currently being kept under wraps, we do know the series is being described as an adaptation of the Gotham Central comic book series and will serve as a prequel to The Batman that “dives into how Gotham became corrupt and infested with criminals” with the Gotham City Police Department being the main focus. There has been no confirmation on whether Robert Pattinson’s version of the Dark Knight will make an appearance in the series.

Although Winter has left his writing position on the series, Reeves will still serve as executive produce under his 6th & Idaho banner. Reeves is currently directing and producing The Batman, which is slated to hit theatres in March 2022.

The Batman sees Robert Pattinson (The Lighthouse) donning the cape and cowl as Bruce Wayne/Batman alongside Zoe Kravitz (Big Little Lies) as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Colin Farrell (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin, Paul Dano (Escape at Dannemora) as Edward Nashton/The Riddler, Jeffrey Wright (Westworld) as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis (War for the Planet of the Apes) as Alfred Pennyworth, John Turturro (The Big Lebowski) as Carmine Falcone, Alex Ferns (Chernobyl) as Commissioner Pete Savage, Con O’Neill (Ordinary Lies) as Chief Mackenzie Bock, Peter Sarsgaard (The Killing) as Gotham D.A. Gil Colson and Jayme Lawson (Farewell Amor) as Bella Real.
