HBO’s The Last of Us is shaping up to be a creative team reunion of their recent hit Chernobyl. The video game-turned-television series will see Chernobyl director Johan Renck team up again with the show’s creator Craig Mazin on the pilot episode.
In a recent interview with Discussing Film, Renck would go on to confirm that he will join The Last Of Us as an executive producer and will helm the pilot episode. There’s no confirmation yet if he will direct more episodes later on as Renck says he’s not going to be involved to the extent that he was on Chernobyl.
Their success on Chernobyl saw the series take home multiple Emmy and Golden Globe awards, as well as see record ratings for HBO at the time. Renck and Mazin will take that acclaim to a video game that comes with just as much admiration. 2013’s The Last of Us video game went on to sell over 1.3 million units in its first week and 20 million by October 2019. It would go on to win multiple Game of the Year awards from several gaming publications, critics, and game award ceremonies.
