TV Land has ordered a pilot for a TV adaptation of the cult 1988 dark comedy Heathers, which will be directed by Leslye Headland (Sleeping With Other People) from a script by Jason Micallef (Butter). Deadline reports that the project will reimagine the movie as an anthology, and “will be set in the present day, as our heroine deals with a very different but equally vicious group of Heathers.”
Heathers starred Winona Ryder as Veronica Sawyer, a popular high school teenager who teams up with a rebellious outsider played by Christian Slater in order to help her get out of a snobby clique threatening to destroy her reputation. However, she soon discovers that he’s actually a sociopath who is intentionally killing students he doesn’t like. Critically acclaimed, the film flopped at the box office, but quickly became a cult classic on VHS.
A TV adaptation of Heathers has been in the works since 2009, and was originally slated to air on Fox. Bravo also had planned for a TV sequel, but passed on the project in 2013.
