Casting continues on Disney’s upcoming adaptation of The Nutcracker, with THR reporting that Helen Mirren is in talks to star in the live-action film, which is based upon E.T.A. Hoffman’s story and the ballet by Peter Tchaikovsky.
Titled The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, the film is being directed by Lasse Hallstrom (The Cider House Rules) and follows “a young girl, Clara (played by Mackenzie Foy), who receives a nutcracker doll from her godfather on Christmas Eve. When she goes to check on it later, the clock strikes midnight and she finds herself thrust into a fantastical world where she is in the middle of a war between gingerbread soldiers and an army of mice.”
Also set to feature in the cast of the film alongside Foy and Mirren are Keira Knightley, Morgan Freeman and ballerina Misty Copeland. It is currently without a release date, but expected in 2018.
