For the past couple of years, there’s been whispers and rumours that Warner Bros. has been quietly developing a sequel to Man of Steel, with the likes of George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road) and Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class) both having been linked to the director’s chair.
Nevertheless, there’s been no official word from Warner Bros. on the subject, and with the studio still reeling from the poor box office performance of Justice League, future plans for the DC Extended Universe remain a little unclear at present beyond Aquaman and Shazam.
Speaking to Collider this week about his Superman future, actor Henry Cavill confirmed that he has been having “conversations” about Man of Steel 2, and that there’s still plenty he’d like to explore with the character:
“I’m having a lot of conversations, behind-the-scenes, with certain people and we will hopefully be having conversations with other people who are also behind-the-scenes to make things start happening. It is very much in my desire to do a Man of Steel 2, a direct sequel to Man of Steel, and there is a whole bunch of Superman story that I want to tell. There is a whole style of Superman’s character that I’m very keen to tell and I’m looking forward to the opportunity.”
Cavill is rumoured to be reprising the role of Superman for an appearance in Shazam!, but if that is the case then the actor wasn’t given anything away when asked by Variety when he’ll next don the cape, replying that: “I can’t answer that definitively right now. I’m hoping sooner rather than later. I’ve been talking to certain people and hopefully we’re going to be talking to other people who are responsible for making those calls.”
