Henry Golding and Larry Hama on how Snake Eyes will differ from previous G.I. Joe movies

December 6, 2020 by Gary Collinson

During yesterday’s CCXP Worlds – the virtual edition of Brazil’s annual Comic-Con Experience – Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins star Henry Golding and legendary G.I. Joe comic book writer Larry Hama were on hand to discuss what fans can expect from the upcoming spinoff movie, and how it will differ from the previous big screen incarnation of the Real American Heroes.

“What fans can kind of expect from Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins is the origin of Snake Eyes,” said Golding. “You see his weaknesses, you see his faults, you see him trying to make amends for decisions that perhaps weren’t as savoury as you would imagine. You see a bond between brothers, you see the thrill of creating a team and defeating the hurdles in front of you, and you get to really see some damn cool fight scenes, which we trained and got our asses kicked for, and they were phenomenal.”

“You have to make it clear to the fans that that’s the thing that makes this different than the other iterations,” added Hama, referring to the film’s fight scenes. “How these martial arts scenes are so central to the whole fabric of the story. In the other iterations, they were secondary. There was lots of vehicles and explosions and all these things, and the thing about having it be central to the martial arts experience and the conflict is that it brings it all down to the characters, and the characters are the only thing you really care about. I think that’s an important thing that potential viewers of this film should know about.”

So far, we’re yet to see anything in the way of promotional material for Snake Eyes, but assuming the film sticks to its current October 2021 release date, it hopefully won’t be too long before we get our first glimpse of Golding as the fan-favourite Joe.

Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins is being directed by Robert Schwentke (R.I.P.D.) from a script by Evan Spiliotopoulos (Beauty and the Beast) and features a cast that includes Henry Golding (Last Christmas) as Snake Eyes, Andrew Koji (Warrior) as Storm Shadow, Iko Uwais (The Raid) as Hard Master, Úrsula Corberó (Money Heist) as The Baroness, Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) as Scarlett and Haruka Abe (Ideal), Takehiro Hira (Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai), and Steven Allerick (The Expanse) in unrevealed roles.
