The BBC launched its adaptation of Phillip Pullman’s beloved fantasy series His Dark Materials this past Sunday, with the series premiere episode scoring the biggest debut for a new British TV drama in over five years.
As reported by Deadline, the first episode was watched by 7.2 million viewers, making it the highest-rated drama premiere on British TV since The Musketeers premiered to 7.4 million viewers back in January 2014.

Written by BAFTA winner Jack Thorne (Skins, This Is England ’86), His Dark Materials features an all star cast that includes Dafne Keen (Logan), James McAvoy (It Chapter Two), Ruth Wilson (The Affair), Clarke Peters (The Wire) and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Mary Poppins Returns).
His Dark Materials airs on BBC One on Sundays in the UK and on HBO on Mondays in the U.S.
