With season two of HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon now in production, the cable network has announced four additional cast members to the series as the Targaryen family fights for control of its future and the Iron Throne.
Joining the series is Simon Russell Beale (The Outfit), Freddie Fox (Slow Horses), Gayle Rankin (GLOW) and Abubakar Salim (Raised by Wolves).
House of the Dragon takes place 200 years before Game of Thrones as it follows the story of the Rhaenrya Targayren, her father’s heir to become the first Queen of Westeros, and the power play her former best friend and step-mother Alicent Hightower makes to place her son on the Iron Throne. The first season ended with the first blood being shed in the coming Targaryen civil war that will have lasting ramifications for the Targaryen dynasty and the future of Westeros.
- Beale will portray Ser Simon Strong, Castellan of Harrenhal and great-uncle to Matthew Needham’s Lord Larys.
- Fox will portray Ser Gwayne Hightower, “son of Otto Hightower, brother to Queen Alicent, and uncle to King Aegon, Queen Helaena, and Prince Aemond.”
- Rankin will portray Alys Rivers, “a healer and resident of Harrenhal.”
- Salim will portray Alyn of Hull, “a sailor in the Velaryon fleet who served in the Stepstones campaign.”
House of the Dragon season two has begun production with a shortened season of 8 episodes instead of the first season’s order of 10. No premiere date has been made yet, but it is likely to arrive summer 2024.
