House of the Dragon season 2 set to air summer 2024

November 2, 2023 by Ricky Church

Audiences will return to Westeros next summer as House of the Dragon will premiere in summer 2024.

While a date has not been announced yet, HBO CEO Casey Bloys confirmed at a media event in New York the Game of Thrones prequel will return for its second season in the summer and even previewed a trailer to the press. House of the Dragon recently wrapped production on season two and is in the middle of post-production now. It is one of the few shows not to have been impacted by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes since the script for its eight-episode season were completed before the strike began and many of the actors are a part of Equity rather than SAG-AFTRA.

House of the Dragon takes place over 200 years before Game of Thrones when the Targaryen dynasty was at the height of its power in Westeros, but a civil war over the Iron Throne erupted in the family which would have long-lasting consequences for the Targaryens, setting the stage for their eventual downfall in the years prior to Thrones.

Season 2 will pick up where the first season left off as the Targaryen family has split over who should rule the rule after the passing of King Viserys with Queen Rhaenyra on one side as the rightful heir Viserys chose and King Aegon, Rhaenyra’s half-brother, on the other led by the manipulations of the Queen mother Alicent Hightower and her father Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King. There was a stalemate between the two forces as they were negotiating, rallying allies and cutting off supplies, but in the final moments of the season one finale Ageon’s brother Aemond indirectly murdered Prince Luke, Rhaenyra’s second son, in a move that spells outright war in Westeros.

Based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” the series, which is set 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones,” tells the story of House Targaryen.

House of the Dragon features a cast that includes Paddy Considine (The Outsider), Matt Smith (Doctor Who), Milly Alcock (Upright), Emily Carey (Casualty), Olivia Cooke (Ready Player One), Emma D’Arcy (Truth Seekers), Rhys Ifans (The Amazing Spider-Man), Steve Toussaint (Small Axe), Eve Best (Nurse Jackie), Fabien Frankel (The Serpent), Sonoya Minuzo (Crazy Rich Asians) and Graham McTavish (Outlander). Season two will feature Simon Russell Beale (The Outfit), Freddie Fox (Slow Horses), Gayle Rankin (GLOW) and Abubakar Salim (Raised by Wolves).
