How the directors of Avengers: Infinity War chose which characters died

May 9, 2018 by Samuel Brace

The directors of Avengers: Infinity War have revealed how they picked which characters died.

Death and destruction was always on the cards for Avengers: Infinity War. What is set to be the biggest film of the year delivered on the promise of loss and chaos caused by the film’s villain Thanos, who, with a click of his fingers, ended the lives of some prominent heroes.

Revealing how they came to choose which characters would perish, the directors of Infinity War, Joe and Anthony Russo, told ComicBook.com that they made up their minds based on what would move the narrative forward:

“Joe and I can’t go into too much detail because we’re not gonna talk about where the story goes from here,” Anthony Russo said. “All of our choices are based on story. It’s based upon the road that these characters have travelled, in not only this movie, but throughout the entire MCU up to this point because, again, these movies are the culmination. So all we can say is that they are very focused story choices. That’s our motivation for everything. And, again, that’s why we love Marvel so much is they never let the tail wag the dog. The creative choices always lead the process and then they figure out how to pull off the miracle of making it work on a business level.”

While the Russos are sticking to the script regarding the permanent nature of the character deaths, fans are confident that the vast majority of those who have perished will return.
