Hugh Jackman has joined the political drama The Frontruner as Senator Gary Hart.
Based on a true story, the film will detail the rise and fall of Gary Hart, the US senator who was the Democratic frontrunner for his party’s nomination for president in 1988.
His campaign was hit by revelations of an affair with Donna Rice, causing Hart to then drop out of the race. Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis would then go on to win the Democratic nomination but only to lose out to now former President George H.W. Bush.
The screenplay has been written by Matt Bai, Jay Carson, and Jason Reitman, based on the book All the Truth is Out. The film will also be directed by Reitman, the man behind Juno and Up in the Air.
The Frontrunner will be produced by Reitman and Helen Estabrook and their company Right of Way Films alongside Bron Studios’ Aaron L. Gilbert.
