UPDATE: Weekend estimates are now putting the Incredibles at a three-day domestic haul of $182 million. Original story follows…
It’s celebration time at Disney HQ once again, as Pixar’s long-awaited sequel Incredibles 2 is tearing up the North American box office this weekend on its way to a whopping $175 million domestic opening.
The film, which has delivered Pixar its seventh A+ CinemaScore, earned $69 million on Friday and is well above tracking estimates of between $110 million and $140 million.
A $175 million haul would shatter the previous record for the biggest animated opening ever – set by fellow Pixar sequel Finding Dory with $135 million – and would also put the superhero sequel ahead of live-action releases such as Iron Man 3 ($174.1 million), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($166 million) and The Dark Knight Rises ($160.9 million).
The original The Incredibles opened with $70 million back in 2004 on its way to a domestic total of $261.4 million and a worldwide haul of $633 million.

In “Incredibles 2,” Helen (voice of Holly Hunter) is called on to lead a campaign to bring Supers back, while Bob (voice of Craig T. Nelson) navigates the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life at home with Violet (voice of Sarah Vowell), Dash (voice of Huck Milner) and baby Jack-Jack—whose superpowers are about to be discovered. Their mission is derailed, however, when a new villain emerges with a brilliant and dangerous plot that threatens everything. But the Parrs don’t shy away from a challenge, especially with Frozone (voice of Samuel L. Jackson) by their side. That’s what makes this family so Incredible.
