Disney-Pixar’s long-awaited superhero sequel Incredibles 2 has enjoyed a record-breaking launch at the North American box office as it pulled in the biggest debut of all time for an animated movie.
The Brad Bird-directed sequel grossed $180 million domestically, shattering the previous animated record of $135 million set by fellow Pixar sequel Finding Dory in 2016. It also topped another Disney release, Beauty and the Beast ($174.6 million), for the biggest ever opening weekend for a PG-rated film.
Incredibles 2 also opened in 26% of international markets, adding a further $51.5 million for a global total of $231.5 million to date.
“We’re so thrilled,” states Disney’s head of distribution, Cathleen Taff. “Brad and team put together a great film that delivers something for everybody. It was the perfect storm.”
The Oscar-winning The Incredibles debuted to $70.5 million domestically back in 2014, and went on to gross $633 million globally during its run.
