Deadline has reported that the Divergent sequel, Insurgent, which is set for release at the end of March, looks likely to have a bumper opening weekend in the US, with tickets sales up on the original.
Tickets for Insurgent went on sale earlier this week through US ticket companies Fandango and MovieTickets.com, and early industry indications have the film heading for a $57 million three-day box office opening during its March 20th-22nd weekend. And while the estimates don’t include advance sales, industry tracking has the film above the $54 million opening weekend of Divergent on the same weekend last year.
Understandably, the film’s tracking is strongest amongst females, with 83% of awareness from females under-25, and another 77% from teenagers between 12-16, with females again showing the main interest in the film.
Robert Schwentke (RED, The Time Traveller’s Wife) directs the sequel, which sees the return of Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Zoe Kravitz, Jai Courtney, Maggie Q, Ashley Judd and Kate Winslet, with newcomers Naomi Watts (Birdman) and Octavia Spencer (The Help) joining the cast.
