Like many productions, Robert Rodriguez and Ben Affleck’s $65 million budgeted thriller Hypnotic was halted by the global pandemic. However, since production eventually wrapped on the film in 2021 there has been numerous financial obstacles that has meant it has been sat on a shelf gathering dust, until now, with rumours emerging that it will finally get a wide-release this summer.
Deadline’s report into the current status of Hypnotic reveals that the film’s original backer and distributor, Solstice Studios, imploded in late 2021, and since then Rodriguez hasn’t really spoken about the finished film.
The current state of play is that U.S. distribution is to be handled by Ketchup Entertainment, who are described as a a ’boutique financier-distributor’ whose last domestic release was 2019’s Captain Sabertooth and the Magic Diamond. International distributors would get the chance to bid for Hypnotic following a first buyers screening taking place on February 17th in Berlin.
Written by Rodriguez and Max Borenstein (Kong: Skull Island), the film will see Ben Affleck playing a detective who becomes entangled in a mystery involving his missing daughter and a secret government program during an investigation into a series of impossible high-end heists. Hypnotic also stars Alice Braga (The Suicide Squad), William Fichter (Armageddon), JD Pardo (The Terminal List), Kelly Frye (Criminal Minds) and Jeff Fahey (LOST).
