Just days after being announced as replacing Scott Derrickson on the Locke & Key TV pilot, director Andy Muschietti has now signed on to helm the live-action Robotech movie, which previously had James Wan attached.
Sony first picked up the rights to Harmony Gold USA’s 80s anime series back in 2015, with an eye on launching a franchise with an “Independence Day meets Star Wars vibe”. Muschietti has closed his deal to direct, and his sister and creative partner Barbara Muschietti will produce.
Robotech launched in 1985, featuring content edited together from three popular Japanese anime series in The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA, and sees humanity fending off alien invasions using technology developed from an extra terrestrial starship that crashed in the South Pacific.
Mama director Muschietti’s next film, the Stephen King adaptation It, is set for release on September 8th.
