We’re one step closer to returning to Derry as Variety reports HBO Max has hired Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane as the showrunners for Welcome to Derry, a prequel TV series to Andy Muschietti’s It duology.
Little is known of the series with the exception that is is a prequel to Muschietti’s two-part adaptation of Stephen King’s novel It and explore the origins of the demonic entity known as Pennywise. Fuchs was a co-producer for It: Chapter Two, working alongside Andy Muschietti and his wife and producing partner Barbara Muschietti.
Fuchs has written the script for the first episode based off a story he and the Muschietti’s developed. Kane has written for several television series throughout his career, most recently for Moonhaven, Tokyo Vice and Warrior. The pair will also executive produce the series alongside the Muschiettis.
It followed a group of young outcast kids in the small town of Derry that is being plagued by a number of mysterious deaths and disappearances. They discover a monster named Pennywise, who can take on the shape of what anyone most fears but is often in the guise of a clown, is behind everything and vow to destroy him. The vow follows them all the way into adulthood as they must return to Derry and finish Pennywise off for good.
Andy Muschietti has been reported to direct the first episode of Welcome to Derry, though it hasn’t been officially confirmed. He is currently in post-production for the DC film The Flash.
