J.J. Abrams talks Kylo Ren, Supreme Leader Snoke and the First Order from Star Wars: The Force Awakens

August 25, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Yesterday Empire Magazine unleashed a brand new image of Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren, the new villain from December’s hugely anticipated blockbuster Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and now we have some comments from director J.J. Abrams, who briefly details Kylo Ren’s allegiance to Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis) and the inspiration for the First Order.

“Kylo Ren is not a Sith,” states Abrams. “He works under Supreme Leader Snoke, who is a powerful figure on the Dark Side of the Force. [The First Order] all came out of conversations about what would have happened if the Nazis all went to Argentina but then started working together again? What could be born of that? Could The First Order exist as a group that actually admired The Empire? Could the work of The Empire be seen as unfulfilled? And could Vader be a martyr? Could there be a need to see through what didn’t get done?”

Abrams directing returning stars Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Kenny Baker (R2-D2) and Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), in addition to Adam Driver (Girls), Oscar Isaac (A Most Violent Year), Andy Serkis (Avengers: Age of Ultron), Domhnall Gleeson (Ex Machina), John Boyega (Attack the Block), Daisy Ridley (Silent Witness), Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones), Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave), Ken Leung (Lost), Miltos Yerolemou (Game of Thrones), Max von Sydow (The Exorcist), Jessica Henwick (Spirit Warriors), Christina Chong (24: Live Another Day), Simon Pegg (Star Trek) and newcomers Crystal Clarke and Pip Andersen.
