He may have shifted Avatar 2 to avoid Star Wars: Episode VIII, but it seems that James Cameron wasn’t overly impressed by Disney’s take on Star Wars, with the filmmaker suggesting that Star Wars: The Force Awakens lacked “visual imagination” and that “the jury’s out” on the Sequel Trilogy.
“I don’t want to say too much about the film,” Cameron told interviewer Hannah Litchfield in a YouTube video which has since been set to private. “[George Lucas] is a friend of mine and I don’t want to say too much about [The Force Awakens] because I also have a lot of respect for J.J. Abrams and I want to see where they’re taking it next. I have to say that I felt that George’s group of six films had more innovative visual imagination, and this film was more of a retrenchment to things you had seen before and characters you had seen before. And it took a few baby steps forward with new characters. So for me the jury’s out. I want to see where they go with it.”
Cameron went on to discuss how he was inspired by George Lucas’ original Star Wars movie, stating that: “Everything just kind of blew up at that point in the visual effects world. It was a big revolution, and I wanted to be in on it. Star Wars was the film that made me want to go actually do it.”
